Peter Sculthorpe Postcard from Nourlangie (1993)

For piano quartet

4 minutes

In 1993, William Howard organised a concert on the South Bank in London to celebrate the 50th birthday of David Matthews, for which the Schubert Ensemble commissioned several short pieces from friends of the composer. Postcard from Nourlangie was written by Peter Sculthorpe for this occasion. The title refers to a rock in the Kakadu National Park in the North Western Territories, a mystical site for the aborigines, and also to a guitar concerto written in 1989 for  John Williams, with which this short quartet has a musical connection.

First performed by the Schubert Ensemble at the Purcell Room, South Bank Centre, London on 8th April 1993.
